6 Healthy and delicious recipes using wild thyme

Wild thyme increases immunity, improves blood pressure and helps in nutrients absorption, so here are some easy to prepare recipes using wild thyme to get its benefits while enjoying its flavoursome taste. 

Recipe No.1: Potato Wedges with Butter and Thyme

Ingredients: 

  • 500 g potatoes, washed, diced into wedges without peeling 
  • 100 g butter 
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil 
  • 1 tsp salt 
  • ¼ tsp black pepper 
  • 1 tbsp wild thyme

Instructions:

  1. In a large pot, bring water to boil and add the potato wedges, leave it for around 10 minutes or until it becomes semi boiled. 
  2. Remove the potatoes from the pot and pat them dry. 
  3. Add the butter, oil, salt, pepper, and thyme to the potatoes and mix well. 
  4. Place the seasoned potatoes in an oven tray and put it into the oven at 190 degrees for 20 minutes or until it becomes golden brown. 
  5. Remove from the oven and serve hot alongside any main dish of your desire. 

 

Recipe No.2: Thyme and Cheese Gluten Free Manakish

Ingredients:

For the dough:

  • 3 cups oat flour
  • ½ cup full fat yogurt 
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tbsp instant yeast 
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil 
  • 1 tsp salt 
  • 1 tsp sugar 

For the filling:

  • 1 cup thyme 
  • ½ cup cheddar cheese, grated 
  • ½ cup Istanbulicheese, cut into small pieces 
  • ¼ cup olive oil 
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds, toasted

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, and yeast. 
  2. Add the yogurt, oil, egg, and start kneading until it forms a homogeneous ball. 
  3. Cover the bowl with a plastic wrap and leave it for 2 hours until it rests and rises. 
  4. Divide the dough into small balls, and flatten each one on a lightly floured surface.
  5. Apply a thin layer of olive oil to a baking tray, then transfer the dough pieces into it, making sure to leave enough space between each one. 
  6. Top each dough piece with cheese and thyme. 
  7. Set the oven to 180 degrees, and put the manakish in it for 20 minutes. 
  8. Serve hot. 

 

Recipe No.3: Grilled Chicken with Lemon and Thyme

Ingredients:

  • 1 whole chicken, cut into 8 pieces 
  • 1 tsp thyme 
  • 1 tsp turmeric 
  • 1 tsp salt 
  • 1 tsp chicken stock powder 
  • ½ tsp black pepper 
  • 1 onion, sliced 
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced 
  • ¼ cup lemon juice
  • 3 tbsp olive oil 
  • ¼ cup water

Instructions: 

  1. In a large bowl put the chicken pieces, spices, onion, garlic, lemon juice, and olive oil, then mix until well combined. 
  2. Cover the bowl and put it in the refrigerator for around 1-2 hours. 
  3. Transfer the chicken pieces into a greased oven tray, add the water and cover it using aluminum foil. 
  4. Put the tray into a 180 degrees oven for an hour, or until it becomes tender and soft. 
  5. Serve while hot, alongside rice, pasta or potatoes.

 

Recipe No.4: Thyme Fried Onion Rings 

  • 2 large onions, cut into circles 
  • ½ cup flour 
  • ¼ cup starch 
  • 1 tsp thyme 
  • ½ tsp paprika 
  • ½ tsp garlic powder 
  • 2 eggs 
  • ½ tsp salt 
  • ½ tsp black pepper 
  • Oil for frying 

Instructions: 

  1. In a medium bowl, mix the flour, starch, thyme, paprika, and garlic powder. 
  2. In another small bowl whisk the eggs and add the salt and pepper to it. 
  3. Dip the onion circles into the flour mixture, then put it into the egg mixture, remove and pat to remove any excess batter, then dip it one more time into the flour mixture, repeat this step with the rest of the onion. 
  4. Fry the onion in a 185 degree oil for around 2-3 minutes or until golden brown. 
  5. Serve the onion rings immediately with your favorite dipping sauce (Ranch, BBQ, Honey Mustard).

 

Recipe No.5: Feta Cheese and Thyme Salad

Ingredients: 

  • ½ cup feta cheese 
  • 1 potato, boiled and cut into small pieces 
  • 2 cucumber, diced 
  • 1 tomato, diced 
  • 1 tbsp thyme 
  • 3 tbsp lemon juice 
  • 2 tbsp olive oil 
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp cumin 
  • Pinch of mint 

Instructions: 

  1. In a large bowl mix all the vegetables. 
  2. Add the thyme, lemon juice, olive oil, salt, pepper, and a pinch of mint, stir until it's well combined. 
  3. Now add the feta cheese, stir once, and serve cold.
